Dana-Thomas House – Springfield, IL

When initially planning our trip to Springfield, IL I knew we would have to check out the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which also had an exhibit with movie sets, props & costumes from the movie “Lincoln” on display at the time.  I was also excited to check out Charlie Parker’s Diner after reading about it being on Food Network’s show “Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives” and wanted to check out some things on Route 66!  I was excited to learn about a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Springfield too: the Dana-Thomas House.

We visited the Dana-Thomas House on a Saturday in the early afternoon.  When we walked into the entrance we were greeted and told the next tour would begin shortly.  There wasn’t an entrance fee, but the suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $15 for families.  We checked out the gift store, and then sat down for awhile waiting for the tour.  We were then led into a room where our tour guide (who was phenomenal!) gave us some history of the home and the previous owners, and played a short informational video about Frank Lloyd Wright.  At first it didn’t look like there’d be many in the tour, but by the time the video was over we had a good sized group.

Here’s a photo of the outside of them home, it is huge!  No photos were allowed inside, and I’m sure there aren’t enough words to adequately describe how cool it is.  There are SO MANY details, and built in customized features.  The home is beautiful and in great condition considering its age.  Our guide has been giving tours for over 20 years and had such enthusiasm and knowledge about the home, which made the visit that much more exciting.  He said they aren’t really told what to say on tours, so each time you go back you will probably have a whole new experience.
