Gold Restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa was suggested to us by our tour guide. We were told this was a great place to go for authentic African cuisine, and that there would be drumming and dancing. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but my hopes were high and of course we had to check it out. Also word on the street was that Mariah Carey was there the night before!
We made reservations, and a group of 6 of us made our way to the restaurant. Walking inside, everyone was so friendly and there was a cute gift shop near the front door. We were there pretty early and things were still being set up so were seated in a little lounge area. A short while later, we were asked if we’d be participating in the drum lessons. I had no idea that this was an option, but was pretty excited for the opportunity. My husband wasn’t so sure about it and offered to video me haha, but with surprisingly little persuasion, he decided to do the drum lesson too! The lesson was very reasonably priced, and SO. MUCH. FUN.
After the drum lesson, we went to our table and were told about the restaurant and different courses of the meal. There were 14 courses in all, which were mostly served family style at our table. It was great being able to try a little of everything without having to worry about ordering something specific off of the menu. There was plenty of food, and we were all stuffed by the end of the night.
Once we started eating, I thought the dancing would start soon on stage (where the drum instructor was). I was quite surprised when I realized that wasn’t the case… they came to each seating area to sing and dance!
The show was really great! There were even some parts where diners were selected to dance or participate in the show too.
Dinner and the show was an all night event, we got back around 10:30 pm or so.

I had such a great time at Gold Restaurant. The singing, dancing and costumes were all amazing. The food was delicious. And, the drum lesson? That was probably one of my favorite experiences of all the things we did in Cape Town! I highly recommend visiting here if you’re in the area!
